Practical2. The second movement sees the young republic building itself, drawing its human resources from Europe and offering them freedom and the hope of prosperity. A heroic adventure is about to begin: the conquest of new frontiers, a nation founded as a new and open society. 3. The third movement brings the United States back to an Old Continent devastated by two terrible wars, to which it offered help and protection. In a bipolar and nuclear world, a divided Europe represented no more than a strategic chessboard. 4. The fourth movement is still with us. It started when the United States won the Cold War and reached the apex of its power. However, the Atlantic Ocean is no longer the sole center of the world. The world has become multipolar and “globalized”, and it challenges the Atlantic community in a completely new fashion. We don’t know the end of this story. Nobody knows it, the future is not written. It builds itself day after day through actions and interactions between nations and human beings, both walking towards their common destiny. This exhibition invites its visitors to engage with their eyes wide open.
Between Europe and the United States, there has always been a great deal more than a global community of interests. Their bond is stronger than any disagreement that can occasionally arise between best friends. There is indeed a close family relationship based on shared values and a common vision of the world. We consider that these values and this vision are fully reflected in the motto of the Age of the Enlightenment as created by Immanuel Kant: “Sapere aude! Have the courage to use your own understanding.” This is how, during five centuries of shared history, in a permanent swing from one side of the Atlantic to the other, Europe and the United States have worked together, going through moments of shadows that must be negotiated and moments of light of which to be proud. In such a rapidly changing world, there is an urgent need to read and understand this tale, here and now, in order to face the coming times. Because as André Gide used to say: “The present would be full of all the futures if the past were not already casting a story in it”. With this new exhibition, the purpose of the Museum of Europe is to offer an accessible reading of our common past for the citizens of both the United States and Europe, so that everyone can participate in the debate about the future that we have to build together.

The first movement starts on the shores of Europe. This was a classic colonial expansion that concluded with a spectacular turnaround: the colony won its independence, claiming for itself the ideas of the Age of the Enlightenment exported from Europe through the settlers.
